Avogadro Online Scoring System

Avogadro Features

Being web-based, Avogadro is accessible before, during, and after the competition wherever web access is available. Aside from doing the actual number-crunching for competition results, Avogadro has several advantages for various aspects of the competition.

Want to try out the features for yourself? Visit the Sandbox instance and log in as User: demo, Password: demo1234. That user is a Manager of that instance. If you want to experience other user levels, use the demo user to visit the user permissions page of the Sandbox instance, where you can promote/demote your own user account to a specific access level to try out. Want to try out more advanced features? Visit the Avogadro documentation site to learn about all the features Avogadro has to offer, and try them out in the sandbox instance.

General Public Results

The general public, including local newspapers, friends and family of competing students may be interested to see the final competition results. Avogadro gives a nicely-formatted grid of competition results viewable to the public after the competition administration closes the competition.

Coach team entry

Coaches have their own user accounts which can give them access to their team entry information. At the competition administrator's preference, coaches can log in and do pre-competition event signups with ease, with competition coordinators double-checking and disabling entries from changing as the competition starts.

Score Entry

Being web-based, scores can be entered wherever the event is taking place. Avogadro remembers raw score entry, so as groups of schools complete their event, their scores can be entered in batches, and after all scores are in, final scores can be assigned. Avogadro also gives easy means to assign 'tiers' of scores when entering raw scores, to ease in scoring

Score Error-checking

Avogadro warns about tied raw score entries, schools not entered in enough events, and schools without a valid raw score value before assigning final scores.

Administrative Configuration

Many aspects of the interface can be tailored by competition organizers to suit the needs of their competitions. Events, event groups, minimum number of events competing in per school, entry types (competing, auditing/trial, etc.), schools, school groups, interface design and colors are all customizable by the organizers from a web-based panel. FTP access is given to completely tailor interface templates to customize the look of your event further.

Speed!

The day of competition, Avogadro requires user input for entering of raw scores for each event, and breaking ties in those raw scores. When using the national scoring system, Avogadro automatically assigns final scores and totals the results, needing no further input, saving the time of copying, comparing, sorting, and finalizing the scores by hand. Because Avogadro enables multiple event coordinators to access the system at the same time, the moment competition ends, all coordinators can start entering scores, and the moment they finish their tiebreaking of the raw scores, Avogadro has the results. State-level coordinators have been able to reduce the time between events finishing and awards ceremony starting to one hour using the Avogadro system.

Security

All users have their own login information, which also allows them access to the Avogadro forum to discus the competition with the coordinators beforehand. Various tiers of user access, plus extensive logging capabilities provide a flexible degree of control and accountability for each competition.

Reliability

Avogadro stores its data in a MySQL database online, accessible wherever the Avogadro.ws website can be reached, but Avogadro also provides export files in the form of CSV files of all the data stored for a competition, accessible by FTP by the competition organizers, such that offsite backup options are possible. Thus, if network connectivity is lost during the competition, the CSV files provide a fallback with minimal data loss to continue the scoring.

Customizability

Avogadro provides each competition with their own website, and competition organizers have access to the source template files to make Avogadro match the look and feel they want to set for their competition, as well as modify the text on any of the pages. Avogadro uses a Smarty template system, and comes with a default set of template files, but competition organizers are welcome to read through the Smarty manual and modify their competition's files however they'd like.
